2020 has been a year of the unexpected. Still, we have all adapted to it. The Nigerian music industry delivered some of the best songs out of Africa this year. From Simi, to Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and more, the airwaves were flooded with impressive tunes. Here is our list of the 10 best songs of the year in no particular order. Mind you, it’s an incomplete list so feel free to add your suggestions to the comments section.
1. Simi – Duduke
One of the biggest songs of the year is “Duduke” by Afro Soul and pop artist, Simi. Best known for her chart-topping “Joromi” single, Simi claimed the airwaves and charts all over Africa with “Duduke”. The song was written for and dedicated to her unborn child at the time. It fast became one of the biggest hits of the year, not only topping charts but also staying in the top 10 for several weeks.
2. Davido – Fem
When Nigerian popstar, Davido dropped the statement-making jam “Fem” no one knew that it would become the ultimate protest song. The song which was released as a diss track towards Grammy-nominated Afro Beats star, Burna Boy referred to as “Odogwu” amassed millions of views and streams in only a few weeks of release. It also claimed the End SARS protest season becoming the most played song at gatherings against police brutality. You might as well say that “Fem” became the ultimate protest song.
3. Cheque – Zoom
Remember when every story on social media featured this song. You practically heard it everywhere, from TikTok to Instagram, Facebook and even on Twitter. Cheque’s “Zoom” became a viral hit all over Nigeria after it dropped. The song talks about not having anytime for the haters, but only having interest in being congratulated. Of course, that’s the kind of music everyone wants to hear. The song was particularly promoted on social media after it went viral on several platforms. It also claimed the radio, and streaming platforms becoming one of the biggest releases of the year.
4. Olamide – Infinity ft. Omah Lay
“She say till infinity, till infinity infinity infinity….” that’s one hook that has refused to leave a lot of heads this year. When Nigerian rapper, Olamide dropped his new album “Carpe Diem”, fans were particularly excited to hear his collaboration with Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer, Omah Lay. Well, it was all worth it. Omah Lay had since dominated the airwaves and streaming platforms with songs from his “Get Layd” EP. “Infinity” with Olamide became his biggest song. It also went viral spawning the Infinity slowmo videos challenge. That was fun.
5. Bella Shmurda – Cash App ft. Zlatan & Lincoln
Have you ever wondered about what it means to scam people on the internet and how it is done? Well, Bella Shmurda details the process in his massive hit song, “Cash App”. He makes it as graphic as you’d expect singing about staying up late to scam an unsuspecting individual. Well, it’s all just a song. The song has become one of the biggest music releases of the year despite the pandemic. Shmurda has also been hailed by many as one of the biggest stars of the year.
6. Wizkid – Ginger ft. Burna Boy
Wizzy Wizzy. Some believe that 2020 was bearable because Wizkid released music in it. What do you think? The Afro Beats star dropped his highly acclaimed album “Made In Lagos” over a month ago and it has become one of the biggest albums of the year. It also contains the hit song “Ginger” featuring “Twice As Tall” hit maker, Burna Boy. Together, they delivered a song that has topped several charts all over Africa and made rounds on social media. Also one of the most played songs on the radio, “Ginger” has attained so much success since it was released.
7. Rema – Ginger Me
Indeed, Nigerian Afro Pop star, Rema is a revelation to the music industry. The BET Award nominee has amassed so much success dropping hits including “Woman”, and “Beamer”. He particularly owned the year with the hit song “Ginger Me”. It was included on Google’s list of the most searched songs in Nigeria this year. The self acclaimed “King of the new age” has been raking in so much success since he hit the scene with the hit song “Dumebi”. It’s nice to see him still killing it.
8. DJ Neptune – Nobody featuring Joeboy and Mr Eazi
Nigerian Disc Jockey, DJ Neptune really owned 2020 with his hit song “Nobody”. The song features contributions from Joeboy and Mr Eazi. Immediately after its release, it become one of the most played songs on the radio this year, and claimed charts all over Africa. Neptune also released a remake of the song with Big Brother Nigeria Season 5 winner, Laycon and Joeboy tagged the “Icons Remix”.
9. Olakira – In My Maserati
Honestly, a lot of us didn’t know who Nigerian singer, Olakira was until he dropped “In My Maserati”. The infectious dance song talks about wooing a woman. The song earned repeated spins on the radio and topped charts all over Africa. Months after its release, a remix featuring Nigerian popstar, Davido was released.
10. Tems – Damages
We will say this now, Tems is unarguably one of the most creative artists to emerge in the Nigerian music industry. Last year, she gave us “Try Me”, a song that earned her a feature alongside Davido from American RnB star, Khalid. This year, she dropped “Damage” an uptempo dance song that has pulled a lot of weight on the charts. Of course, Chris Brown loved it so much that he called her “fire”. Shout out to the stunning hit maker.
